Tajikistan

Tajikistan is home to 8.8 million people, a third of whom live below the poverty line. Many households depend on family members working in Russia, but this source of income is threatened by Russia's economic downturn along with stricter controls on immigrants. Despite enormous progress in financial inclusion, more than half of adults lack access to a bank account.

FINCA Tajikistan is a licensed Micro Deposit-taking Organization, offering different types of agricultural, business and personal loans designed to help people earn a living and improve their quality of life, along with savings services so they can reach their goals.

Financial Inclusion

Tajikistan:
Reaching the Financially Excluded

61% Adult population financially excluded
10,461 40% Female borrowers % #
38,672 Total FINCA clients
17,865 69% Borrowers in rural areas Poverty is especially widespread in rural areas. % #
25,891 Total FINCA borrowers

Tajiksitan has made huge progress in extending financial services to its population, nevertheless, over half of adults still lack access to a bank account. Those who are able to borrow or save money in a formal institution have limited options, often on unfavorable terms. Amidst this overall scarcity, FINCA Tajikistan maintains a special focus on reaching the most vulnerable populations, with a significant presence in rural areas.

One of FINCA's biggest achievements in Tajikistan is its outreach to rural customers, who comprise two-thirds of the client base. This success in rural penetration reflects a strong physical presence, especially in the south-eastern region of the country, along with product offerings that are tailored to the needs of farmers and agri-businesses.

Living Standards

Tajikistan:
Quality of Life

10,356 40% Client homes without water Outside of Africa, only Afghanistan has a higher share of customers without this basic service. % #
518 2% Client homes without electricity % #
19,418 75% Client homes without access to Internet This is 20 percentage points higher the regional average. Internet penetration is constrained by a limited reach of the telcom sector, the high cost of access, and widespread poverty. % #
518 2% Clients who don’t own their home % #
1,346 5% Head of household with primary education or less % #

FINCA's clients in Tajikistan enjoy good access to electricity and high levels of home-ownership and education. However, 40 percent of all borrowers are struggling without access to water, more than any other country in the region. Rural households often use polluted irrigation water when potable water is unavailable, leading to a high incidence of waterborne diseases.

Women’s Empowerment

Tajikistan:
Empowering Women

10,461 40% Female borrowers % #
7,256 28% Clients with female-headed household % #
8,465 33% Households with female as main earner % #

The majority of FINCA's female customers around the world are the main source of income for their household. Tajikistan exemplifies this phenomenon: 34 percent of borrowers are women, and 27 percent of them (or 80 percent of all women borrowers) are the main income-earners in their family. In Tajikistan, the majority of them are single mothers, which is not normally the case in Eurasia. This group makes-up a full quarter of the client base, putting Tajikistan on a par with places like Guatemala and Honduras, where there are high rates of male labor migration to neighboring countries. This highlights the importance of FINCA's money transfer services, which can serve as an important conduit for women's financial inclusion and the sustenance of their families.
