Kosovo

Kosovo is one of the poorest countries in Europe. Its unemployment rate, at 30 percent, is among the highest in the world. The situation is especially dire for women and youth. Well over half of people between the ages 15 to 24 are unemployed. Even a decade of stable economic growth has not succeeded in fixing this problem, which is driving many people to migrate out of the country.

FINCA entered Kosovo in 1999, with a special commitment to helping its people rebuild after a period of conflict. The organization is on a growth trajectory all across the country. FINCA's clients are mainly small business owners, farmers, and self-employed people. In addition to financial services, FINCA delivers training on topics like agriculture and finance. FINCA Kosovo has been awarded Smart Certification in recognition of its client-friendly practices.

Financial Inclusion

Kosovo:
Reaching the Financially Excluded

42% Adult population financially excluded
6,578 26% Female borrowers % #
25,147 Total FINCA clients
7,293 29% Borrowers in rural areas % #
25,147 Total FINCA borrowers

About half of adults are excluded from financial services in Kosovo. While this is one of the lower rates of exclusion in the region, it is particularly harmful in the context of chronic high unemployment, which drives many people to create their own jobs in the informal sector. With no job prospects and no source of funding for their own businesses, others are forced to leave the country, which has created one of the largest out-migrations of people in Europe.

Living Standards

Kosovo:
Quality of Life

3,269 13% Client homes without water Water quality is a common problem for rural households, which often rely on domestic wells with inadequate sanitation systems. % #
0 0% Client homes without electricity % #
5,029 20% Client homes without access to Internet % #
503 2% Clients who don’t own their home % #
6,864 27% Head of household with primary education or less This is 10x the regional average. Lower levels of education are especially common among women. % #

In general, living standards in Kosovo are on a par with the region overall. However, the educational profile of the households we serve is much lower than in other countries. Over a quarter of the families have a breadwinner with only a primary education or less — versus a regional average of 3 percent. This educational disadvantage limits the ability of these families to earn higher incomes and perpetuates poverty across generations.
