Eurasia

FINCA has operated in Eurasia since 1995. Our operations cover countries that suffer from widespread poverty, such as Tajikistan, Armenia and Kyrgyzstan, as well as others that are striving to create modern, market-led economies. In both cases, the lack of banking services is an impediment to social and economic progress.

FINCA's impact in Eurasia is particularly evident in its rural outreach and job creation indicators. Rural customers make up 65 percent of all borrowers, higher than any other region. Many of our borrowers are engaged in farming and rearing livestock. These clients use FINCA's loans to purchase seeds or fertilizer, and they pay their installments after harvesting their crops. Along they way, they employ additional workers. The average client in Eurasia employs 2.2 people (including herself). About a third of these jobs are directly attributable to FINCA loans, the highest in the FINCA network.

Nearly 6 out of 10 adults lack access to a bank account in Eurasia, Financial exclusion is worse for women, the poor, and people in rural areas. More than any other region, FINCA Eurasia has established a presence in rural communities, offering services that are tailored to the needs of farmers. About two-thirds of our borrowers are from rural areas, where FINCA's credits for agriculture and livestock help them to purchase inputs and hire the workers they need for expansion.

FINCA's clients in Eurasia generally enjoy better living standards than the other regions where we work. Electricity is more widely available and most adults have more than a primary education. There are, however, instances of acute hardship in certain countries, such as the lack of clean water in Azerbaijan and Tajikistan. Meanwhile, about a fourth of our clients' households in Kosovo are headed by someone with less than a secondary education. This problem not only poses daily challenges; it also undermines the family's ability to improve their quality of life over time.

The enterprises financed by FINCA employ just over 2 people each, including the owner. Our clients attribute about a third of total employment in their businesses directly to the help of FINCA's loans. Even better, their firms and their farms are earning a healthy profit -- 46 percent on average. This means that our clients are able to pay a living wage to their workers. Eighty-two percent of employees in these businesses are being paid wages above the national poverty line, showing that the impact of financial services can be felt in many more families than those of our clients alone.

Many of our female clients in Eurasia are the main breadwinner in their household. Besides providing for their families, they are creating jobs for others in their community, FINCA's impact on the economic participation of women is especially evident in Kyrgyzstan, where about 50 percent of the total employment is created by women. Owning a business and hiring workers enhances women's status in their communities and shows that they are not just the beneficiaries of grassroots economic growth -- they are its drivers as well.

In the rural communities we serve, a profitable farm or agricultural business is the means for many families to achieve their goals. Most clients are busy expanding their existing activities or launching a new one. Since the vast majority are home-owners, it is not surprising that the Eurasia region has the highest percentage of borrowers whose main priority is home improvement. Basic services are usually lacking in rural areas, so the quality of one's home is a major factor in the comfort and safety of their families. It also serves as an important means to store and grow their wealth over time.
